Importance of Parent-Teacher Relations in Children’s Education

This report is based on a radio broadcast hosted by Rev. Helen I. Dorkenoo on 23 July 2012 at RTV RAZO in Amsterdam Southeast. The broadcast explored how multicultural dynamics in Dutch society affect parent-teacher relations, especially among migrant families.

Panelists

  • Ms. Panshensi – Artist and parent
  • Mr. Odame – Retired teacher and parent
  • Ms. Mavis Manu – Teacher and parent
  • Ms. Sarah Larbi – Child-parent worker

Key Highlights

  • Teachers significantly influence children's development, but parental support accounts for up to 57% of a child’s growth.
  • Parental involvement is valuable but doesn’t always directly translate into higher academic performance.
  • Barriers such as language difficulties, cultural unfamiliarity, and lack of time hinder migrant parents’ participation.
  • Engaging parents through churches and social groups can improve involvement.
  • Parents should attend open days, communicate regularly with teachers, and make use of support systems like the "Ouder Contact" point.

Recommendations

  • Create inclusive communication channels in languages parents understand.
  • Encourage informal and flexible parent-teacher engagement.
  • Provide accessible platforms for parental feedback and involvement.

The discussion concluded that building stronger, culturally sensitive parent-teacher partnerships is essential for the holistic development of children in a diverse society.

The 2015 Radio Naija Community Project aimed to engage and empower the Nigerian and broader African communities in Amsterdam Southeast through a grassroots media platform. Utilizing Radio Naija via Salto public access radio, the project fostered dialogue, information sharing, and cultural expression.

Over the course of the initiative, it delivered community-focused radio programs, organized training workshops for volunteers in broadcasting and journalism, and facilitated stronger networks among African residents, local organizations, and service providers.

Key achievements include:
  • The successful production of 12 live community radio broadcasts
  • The training of 15 community members in media production
  • The creation of a supportive platform for voicing local concerns

The project highlighted the role of community radio in promoting social inclusion, cultural identity, and civic participation. Despite facing technical and logistical challenges, the project met its primary objectives and laid the groundwork for continued community media engagement.
